Godilla stops on by with his thoughts on a project that he and I had been discussing recently, the self titled album by Free Enterprise presented by Gold Chain Military. The group project by the same name from emcees Supreme Cerebral and Nowaah The Flood with producer The Kurse brings quality hip-hop with a balance of gritty rhymes and smooth, hard hitting production. The album starts off with, “Basquiat Thoughts”, which sets the tone with street orientated rhymes of various subjects over cinematic synths and a guitar riff that gets you in a zone. Supreme Cerebral shows dexterity while keeping his middle finger attitude at the naysayers with rhymes like, “Moved up like the Jeffersons whippin’ Lexuses, coppin’ coke from Mexicans, you can eat my excrement”, and Nowaah settin’ off his rhyme with, “Gentlemen of leisure brought the proper anesthesia”, draws the listener in for that official product. Banish and Definite Mass show up to rep on the ultra smooth, “Pure Balance”. The vocal sample and chops are undeniable on, “Hockey Mask”. The marriage of smooth production and no nonsense rhythms continue on cuts like, “The Gospel”, and the Eff Yoo asssisted, “Rick Rude”. Eff Yoo continues his assault of bravado and esoteric rhymes picking up where The Kurse produced project, ‘Spicaso’, left off. The ill piano with the Prodigy vocal sample gives the emcees a perfect platform to flex that classic street style that seems to be missing from today’s scene. All in all, I was very impressed with this project. Well written rhyme schemes, dope production and all around ill shit. Let’s hope they hit us with a sequel in the near future. -Godilla
