I know a lot of people who refuse to listen to new Hip Hop because (in their eyes) the current era does not compare to the 90’s era. I will be the first to tell you that the 90’s were an amazing time for Hip Hop. The music was different because artists were not scared to be original. The radio stations would support original Hip Hop in the 90’s. The stations accepted creativity and did not let labels dictate what was being played. This is not the case these days. Today’s radio stations do NOT support Hip Hop the way they did back then.
When I say “Hip Hop”, I’m talking about the music that originated in the street. I’m talking about the music that could bring large crowds together and have them rap lyrics in unison. The music that would have kids battling each other in rhyming, djing, bombing, and dancing. I’m talking about the music that we have grown to love. This is the Hip Hop that I am talking about.
Although we are not being fed this by mainstream media, I can assure you that the same originality and creativity is still here today. There are artists who are still hungry and want to be the greatest ever. There are artists that are out now that would have been Top 10 in the 90’s (Yeah, I said it!). We have to stop living in the 90’s bubble and support the new generation of Hip Hop. If we do, they will get the exposure and radio play that they deserve. If we don’t, we will continue to hear the same bullshit we have been listening to on the radio for the last few years. Shout out to Mills for getting me out of the 90’s mind state. Bless.
Stroydnaire (Notice how many times the word Hip Hop is mentioned in this article…..that’s no coincidence. We rep Hip Hop to the fullest!)
