Long Island native Sir Diggy drops a new project Of Ancient Godz. I was put on to Sir Diggy by the blog fam Leeps and from what I’m hearing so far the kid is nice.
He first began rhyming at the young age of fourteen but began really honing his skills in 2009 when he became friends with producer Nickel Plated. In fact Nickel Plated produced some of the tracks.
He has some impressive features and production backing this album just by perusing the track list. So sit back and join me as we review some Sir Diggy. As always the stream is at the end of the review. Let’s check it out!
1. Ares ft. Termanology & CRIMEAPPLE (prod by Stu Bangas)
Aha so the name of the album makes sense. We are going with God named tracks here. The God of War happens to be one of my favorites. This track is backed by smooth production and Term and Crimeapple flow nicely with Sir Diggy. I love the way the lyrical content is relevant to the title and not just a gimmick. I fuck with this…and I love feta cheese too. However it didn’t stand up as the intro *I’ll explain later *in rotation
2. Apollo ft. Rob Markman (prod by Mr. Green)
On the original playthrough I didn’t really like this song. However Rob Markman shines on this track while Sir Diggy holds his own. I think it was the sing song hook that threw me but on the shuffle play and the driving test it grew on me. I’m digging it.
3. Banshee (prod. by Icerocks)
I really liked this song and Im glad to see Sir Diggy shine on his own. The first two tracks had feautures so it was dope to hear him rhyme alone. By the way the hook on this shit is eerily haunting. I’m Scyren, Banshee you get why it resonates lol *in rotation
4. Interlude For Icarus (prod. by Nickel Plated)
Okay I am all for fusion sounding production and while the song is ill it just doesn’t match the vibe of the rest of the project. Now hear me out… Nickel Plated is an outstanding producer and if every track had some experimentation on it it would be fine but this just sticks out. I’m not really feeling this one.
5. The Nightmare ft. AG Da Coroner & Rock (prod. by Nickel Plated)
This is a banger. Everyone compliments one another on this track. He picked his features well. Also this is a perfect driving song. Caution though I was weaving in and out of traffic nodding my head. I just wish it was a tad longer… *in rotation
6. Sir Diggy Daydream (prod. by Stu Bangas)
Okay so I fuck with this track. I just hate the length. I get that in this day and age with so much music available and attention spans being what they are… but FUCK I was just getting invested, the production is ill as fuck and then BOOM it’s over. Not a happy Scy.
7. Zeus (prod. by Doza The Drumdealer)
Okay first off can we just take a moment and appreciate the genius of Doza The Drumdealer’s name?? Okay and now a moment for the niceness of the production. That being said… love the production, love the lyrics, love the lyrics of the hook…but hate the execution of the hook. And this is the ZEUS song!! I had higher expectations. But I still can fuck with it.
8. Her (prod. by Nickel Plated)
Love this nod. And I love that newer emcees pay homage HOWEVER stop singing on the hooks!! Its okay it just makes an otherwise fire song just okay.
9. Hades (prod. by Nickel Plated)
This is not my favorite track on the album but it is the MOST IMPORTANT. Why do you ask? This song convinced me that Sir Diggy is the real deal. And I especially love that it was a featureless track that made me a fan. Nice.
10. Illest Ever Made ft. AG Da Coroner & Ruste Juxx (prod. by Nickel Plated)
This is another banger and an excellent choice for a closing track. It just leaves a good vibe at the album’s end. Plus Diggy, AG and Ruste do their thing on this and again their flow plays nicely off one another. *in rotation
Okay so overall, this being my first introduction to Sir Diggy I must say he is talented. I can fuck with some Dig on a track by track basis.. I have to be honest though. One of the most vital things about putting together a project (for the listener) is cohesion and this album felt more chaotic at times. Although it appeared to be a concept album with many tracks taking their names from Gods and hitting in the subject matter there were some stray tracks thrown in that didn’t really fit in seamlessly. While each track as a stand alone is dope, as an album I wasn’t that convinced. However it was enjoyable and I think it definitely deserves a listen. I also took a few deductions for some of the song lengths. I don’t mind a minute track just not too many. As a single sure but on a project I am devoting time to listening to this emcee I want to hear what you have to say. There is a happy medium and this one felt rather short.
I also really wished that he chosen a solo track as his intro song. Banshee would have been a dope opening track. For one the production is dope and I feel like that would have been a stronger introduction to Sir Diggy as an artist without comparing him to the features that I DO know. But I will say this, Sir Diggy is talented and I will be keeping an ear out for anything he drops in the future.
Overall: B+ (points off for placement and length)
Okay so what did you guys think? Leave some comments for me because this is one of those projects I am interested to hear what you guys think. Especially be on the lookout for the upcoming interview with Sir Diggy where we pick his brain about Of Ancient Godz, his love of hip hop, life in general and what’s next to come.
Peace from your girl Scy!
