Brown Bag All Star, J57 dropped his somewhat secret rap EP. Yes, I said rap, as in emceeing. A few days ago I posted “DETLANY” off the album and told you about how this record was coming. Usually bumrushing the drums and boards, J57 takes some time to showcase to you one of his other skills. I recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a session and getting to know the guy. Very genuine, determined, and confident is what I gathered from our first up close encounter. I’ve been following the BBAS crew for some time now blogging them and their releases over the years as well as Live from HQ with DJ Premier. That’s where I first was introduced to J57. Everyone else, well that’s a different story. He’s a taste of it.
It all started when I was given a promo from The Audible Doctor at Fatbeats on Houston during a Common In-store. The Brownies EP was a beat tape made with all samples excavated from the late, great James Brown. Since then I followed AD and all the people he was working with at the time. Back then there was no BBAS yet, and he was pretty much doing it for dolo. Over the years I dug thru internet archives trying to find whatever I could related to them after hearing a Soul Khan song another local friend of mine produced.
Now it’s 2014, the bond is stronger than ever between friends and these guys have grown to represent and embrace what hip hop really is. They are great as a group and all have a good amount of notches on their belts from other things they have been involved in on a solo level. Also props to PJ Katz for getting a joint on here. Take some time to check this out and support someone who is trying to put the grit back in. He’s has DJ Premier’s co-sign as well as DJ Eclipse, does he have yours?
