“Let’s PRETEND…” is something new at the 7th BORO. It is where we give you a question or put you in a situation and you have the freedom and luxury to be as creative and imaginative in your response as you wish.
The reason Stroy and I linked up and joined forces to work on a Hip Hop website was because of a “Let’s PRETEND…” question. The question was: “If you can assemble an ultimate and dream posse track, which 10 MCs would you choose and who would produce it?” We also took it further by choosing the order in which the MCs rhymed on the track. When you are really a Hip Hop fan, you want to see Hip Hop shine and you want the real Hip Hop to be as huge as music itself. In our perfect world, we wanted to see our favorite MCs collaborate and make a track for the ages.
Will any of this come true? Maybe and maybe not. But it sure is fun to PRETEND…
With the major signing of Slaughterhouse to Shady, I felt like another “Let’s PRETEND…” question was in order. I’ve always told people that if I had unlimited money, I would sign all my favorite MCs, give them a humongous budget, give them 100% of the creative control, and tell them to make an album. Mr. Mathers did not have to pretend… He did EXACTLY that! WE, on the other hand, must pretend.
So, the question is:
If you had UNLIMITED money, which artists would you sign to your record label in order to make your ultimate and dream roster?
I’m going to have to let this one simmer for a bit…………..
I think my first order of business would be to sign The Arsonists. My second order of business would be to sign Nas. I will tell Nas that he is free to spend as much as he wants on creating an album. My only requirement would be that Preemo and Pete Rock produce at least one track.
Next, I would sign Talib Kweli and Mos Def and have them make another Black Star album. Once again, I would give them creative control and unlimited monies so they could go nuts. That would just be the tip of the iceberg though. I’d make more moves than Barry Sanders in a room full of women!
My IMMEDIATE plans would be:
I would sign Royce and Em as a duo and have them drop “Bad Meets Evil” album… no doubt have Kweli and Mos put out another Blackstar album… I would sign Chino XL, Joell Ortiz, and Canibus as solo artists and have them get ANY producer and have ALL creative control… I would form a supergroup with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, J. Cole, and Jay Electronica… then have all four of them drop solo albums… I’d bring Pun back to make a collab album with Nas… and another supergroup consisting of Pharoahe Monch, Black Thought, Common, and Lupe Fiasco.
First i would sign Em and Royce, then Joell, Mos and Talib. Sign Nas and Jay to make a mega group with them and em. i would buy a high rise in downtown MIA with 5-8 studios in it, have them all live there for a year recording day and night and put out an album every month for a year straight. all colabo albums with each other.

Mine would be as follows:
Breez Brewin, Slick Rick, Fresh Daily, Q-Tip and Black Thought and the name of the group would be The Renaissance. Prolly a bit to obvious or even cliche, but it’s what popped into my brain.

As WE say “better late than never” & you knew me & famz’d remind you.I Had DJ Spinna as my DJ,until i said gotta be 1 or (2) in my case that NEVER had MASS exposure.Which i know we both consider Underground Railroad.Nice emcee Choices also.I was like….this could be an LJ imposter….w/no DJ.Quick as i thunk it…..you showed-up,lol.peace.DJ JS-1….nice spotting someone i’d take noone over for performance….&…..trk.selection….see the TIMELESS school DJ’s ala DJ Cash Money….did it all.Now you need DJ for LP cuts,A seperate tour DJ,if your production-camp’s self-contained…..a production dj……then Listen to how 2nd-ary Marvelous Marv is to just DJ Cash Moneys audio obliteration of those Bass Lines&Snare Taps….sound quiality of 24 sounds like 48 becuz of DJ’s’ manipulation of horns…..&…..Programmed (the key) Chopped drums….

I think it’s dope how we all love Hip Hop and have completely different ideas on artist signings. I think this is my favorite post on 7th Boro thus far. I’m happy you guys are peeping the site. I love reading & learning from everyone’s comments. Thanks for the support! On that note……………I do have another idea for a signing. I would sign Drake & Nikki Minaj and place a gag order on them so they could never create shit again! Their albums would be blank TDKs!
