Run Beastie

Today is Monday and I was going through some of my old Beastie Boys LP’s and figured that it would be a good idea to feature one of my Favourite Hip Hop “Bands” from the Old School Era for this Throwback.

Now some of y’all are probably confused and ask yourself “Why is Smu using a picture of the Beastie Boys with the legendary Run DMC Crew?”. Well the Answer is dead simple actually…

This cut that right here was featured on their Album “Licensed to ill” and had a Run DMC sound to it,simply because the B-Boys actually “covered” their song .

The late Adam “MCA” Yauch spoke on this in the Booklet of Beastie Boys Anthology Double Disc release and is mentioning this record in particular:

When Run DMC were recording their King of Rock Album we had the good fortune of being around because we shared the same manager. They were amazing. I remember being in the studio while they were recording vocals for one of their songs, and being dumbfounded by how incredible they were. Anyway, when they finished the record and sequenced it they decided to leave off one of our favourite songs. It was called “Slow and Low“. I remember rifling through Russell Simmons’ Desk one day when he was out and finding a cassette of it,and then secretly copying it so that i could have it to listen to. Later as we were working on Licensed to ill, we asked them if we could do a cover of it. We made new music but kept most of their Lyrics. In fact the only lines we changed were “D sees real well ’cause he has four eyes” to “White Castle fries only come in one size” and “Run DMC not Cheech and Chong” to “Beastie Boys not Cheech and Chong.” I wish i still had thatt tape of their version.

I totally agree with him on that one. It would’ve been dope to actually hear their version too but i guess that might never happen…
Anyhow here’s the actual record that appeared on the Album.
Enjoy the track and have a nice day!
